Loimu
Loimu
Loimu is inspired by the legend of the Firefox. In Finnish mythology, the Northern Lights are born when the Firefox dashes through the wilderness, its tail striking sparks from every branch and bush, igniting glowing trails across the heavens.
The body of the piece is crafted from Finnish birch. The surface is hand-finished with thin layers of acrylic glazing, giving the hue a deep, glass-like appearance. The pigment used is pyrrole red, a name derived from the Greek word pyrrhós – meaning 'fiery'.
The glass used in the work is opalescent Bullseye art glass. The pieces are hand-cut and kiln-fused into a single, seamless whole. The glass always reacts to the firing process individually, making each piece unique. Glass is placed at different levels to highlight the animal’s most vital features. When the light is turned on, it creates an optical depth that shifts according to the viewer's perspective.
